Greetings everybody and welcome back to another week!

Just a couple announcements to make as always.SESSIONS: Pool sessions on Tuesdays are continuing as normal but Friday sessions will be halted for the foreseeable future due to a change in pool slot openings for clubs

A Beginner canal session will be held tomorrow (Tuesday) and each week at 6:15pm. Both sessions have been booked out very quickly but you can join the waitlist incase anyone booked decides not to go.

If you're registered for a session and can't attend, could you please unregister for the session on Yourspace to open up a slot for the eager people on the waitlist.

We intend on adding more sessions throughout the weeks to come in order to get more of ye out into the cool, crisp, refreshing canal waters.MEETINGS: We will start having our Wednesday evening meetings this very Wednesday the 4th! They won't be every week but if there's anything important to be discussed, it'll be at one of those meetings. This week will be an introduction presentation for all club members, where the outline of the year and what will be made available to you will be discussed. Great time for questions too! Location and exact time TBC for now but can be expected to be in the Concourse (NUIG) building after 6pm. DPI and RSR 1

Hi all,

Before we officially begin for this year I'd like to bring your attention to a couple of training courses we will be running over the next week or two.
As you may know, each year the club runs a DPI, this is an in-house coaching course which will enable you to teach flatwater, with the club (canal sessions). This course is open to all, whether you want to begin instructing or if you just want to develop your skills as a paddler, it will cover many fundamentals of paddling. This year, it will be run on Sunday 11th September, by Aoife Hanrahan, a legendary Irish paddler, an alumnus of the club and a fantastic teacher. You are guaranteed to learn something from this course, not to mention it will be fantastic craic. Time is yet to be confirmed but expect to spend the day on the water.
A key benefit of the DPI, and helping to coach sessions, is that you will be eligible for the coaching pathway, which means you can avail of up to a 75% subsidy on any training or upskilling you may need to become an instructor with the club, this includes river safety, first aid courses, and any skill/instructor assessments.
Aoife will also be running an RSR 1 course over a number of Monday evenings, at 6pm. This is a canoeing Ireland-certified course and it teaches basic river safety skills. This is also strongly recommended for anyone who wishes to improve their paddling skills as it provides a fantastic base for river safety.
If you wish to sign up for either of these (attending both is strongly encouraged) please complete the form linked. Thank You!

Sorry about no email last week. Our instructors were groggy and tired so we all weren't in the best shape after Varsities so very few sessions were happening. But we are back this week with a bang!!

The GMIT/NUIG kayak club travelled to Cork the past weekend for Varsities 2022, our team came 2nd overall, tied with UL, despite the stormy conditions, which is outstanding news. We are so proud of our team and would love if you could share our results on social media to showcase our achievements. Our team competed across 5 different competitions: Freestyle, Whitewater, Boater Cross, Polo and Long Distance.

In Freestyle our kayaker Lucien Schreiber came 1st swiftly followed by David McClure in 2nd. With strong performances from the other athletes, NUIG took 4th place in Freestyle.

In Whitewater in the male division once again Lucien Schreiber came 1st, 21s ahead of the second place and Aleksei Mzachev came 4th. In the women division, previous NUIG captain Laoise Plunkett took 4th and Muireann Van Nieuwenhove 6th with clean lines down the river Lee. This was an amazing achievement and NUIG took the win on this event.

In Boater Cross Ben Nolke, Aleksei Mzachev and David McClure got to the semis and Laoise Plunkett got to the final round, finishing the race in 3rd place.

In Polo we got 4th place after a long semi-final game with extra time and penalties.

In Long Distance all team members pushed hard to gain points and make a mark in the competition. We took a win in Male GP and 2nd place in Canoe Duo.

Fantastic news everybody we now have pool slots for Friday evenings in the kingfisher where you can practice in a nice warm environment as we go into colder months.

These pool sessions will be available for everybody and will go through rescues and rolling and will be run by me (Aleksei).

So if you've been busy during the week and only had times on the weekends this session could be for you!

The next weekly email will have all the information that you will need to know how to register for the session along with the week ahead.

Can't wait to see everybody out on the water!

Aleksei
