Men’s Team Report

The men’s team were up first in UL last weekend and their first fixture was against a fast-paced TCD side. The first half started off well and both teams were evenly matched, unfortunately Trinity began to pull away in the third quarter and our guys couldn’t get into a consistent flow for the second half of the game and TCD came out on top.

Next up was a strong MU team, the beginning of this fixture was very much in the Falcon’s favour and the team were holding a close lead throughout the first half. However, Maynooth came flying out of the blocks in the third quarter and kept this tempo for the rest of the game and we couldn’t retain the lead. This game finished with Maynooth prevailing as the winners.

Unfortunately, the two losses meant the men’s team didn’t progress out of the pool stages, but they definitely showed some great basketball giving the team promising hopes for the next season as they retain a lot of their players.

Ladies Team Report

Next up was our ladies team who made their first ever appearance at the intervarsity tournament. Their pool consisted of IT Carlow, MU & UL, being the only Division 3 team in the tournament the girls knew it would be a tough pool to get out of but were ready for the challenge.

Their first game was against MU, the eventual winners of the competition. They were a tough and competitive team who really put our girls to the test from the start. Unfortunately our team struggled to get into the game properly and by the time the girls did it was too late, Maynooth maintained their lead throughout the whole game.

Next was IT Carlow, another team with talent and determination, this time our girls were ready from the beginning and went score for score with Carlow right up until the third quarter. However, the sharp shooting from Carlow’s American scholar was too good for us and Carlow pulled ahead to take the win. This game was a huge improvement from the first and the team performance was more familiar to how the girls played during the regular season.

Finally, bright and early on Saturday morning the girls had their final pool game against tournament hosts, UL. This was a brilliant performance from the whole team, they took the lead in the first quarter and never let it go, coming out on top of this fixture against a division one side who had twice as many players as the Falcons. It was a game that went down to the wire in the end but the girls proved themselves and played extremely well together throughout the game.

It was a great finish to the season for both teams despite not getting out of their respective pools and everyone had a great weekend in Limerick. Special mention to Aimee Fox & Emma Fagan who both played their last games as Falcons as they are both final year students. Everyone is already looking forward to next season as ATU Falcons.
